The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) expresses its serous concern over the devastating fire in Amazon Rain Forest. The CPB also condemns the anti-people role of ruling Brazilian government led by its ultra-rightist president Jair Bolsonaro for his pro-corporate and anti-environmental policy which has already caused damage to more than 500,000 acres of virgin forest and thousands of wild animal have been killed and local ethnic groups are seriously affected. In a statement to the press on 24th August 2019 CPB President Mujahidul Islam Selim and General Secretary Shah Alam said that this is serious ecological disaster. The rightist-reactionary government of Brazil is mainly responsible for this disaster, who for their vested interest continuously promoted Multi-National Companies for indiscriminate exploitation of the Amazon rain forest at the cost of the vital consideration of environmental protection. On the other hand, despite being poorest nation of that region the leftist Bolivian government has taken up the task of fire-fighting in the rain forest and called neighboring countries to be part of this effort. The Amazon rain forest covers 7.4 million square kilometer which involved nine countries including 60% area of Brazil and extends over Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Surinam, Guyana and French Guiana. This large rain forest of Amazon absorbs about one billion tons of Carbon Dioxide per year and releases Oxygen. This is why it is has been termed as the ‘earth’s lungs’. This is way this ecological disaster will affect the environment of Bangladesh and the entire world. CPB calls on the UN to intervene in mitigating this disaster and to investigate and punish offenders. CPB Leaders in their statement have said that this disaster has nakedly exposed the corporate greed and ugly face of capitalism.
