Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Socialist Party of Bangladesh-SPB and Ganatantrik Bam Morcha leaders have condemned and protested the brutal attack on the general students of the University of Dhaka while they were protesting against authority. They also urged to arrest attackers from ruling party’s students wing Chhatra League (BCL) and to punish them immediately.
Protesting students were brutally attacked by BCL when they were protesting the attack and sexual harassment on female students of the University and demanding the cancelation of the affiliation of seven new colleges under this university. According to common students, this new affiliation will put extra burden to the educational system of the University and it will degrade the quality of their education. The barbaric attack took place on 23rd January at the Vice Chancellor’s office of the University of Dhaka. Bangladesh Students’ Union (BSU) and other progressive student organization leaders rushed to the spot when they heard about the attack. They were also attacked by the BCL hooligans. At that time at least 30 activists of BSU including central general secretary Liton Nandi, Vice-president Anik Roy, DU president Tuhin Kanti Das, Dhaka City general secretary Jahar Lal Roy were injured. Other progressive organization leaders were also injured during the attack.
Leftist political leaders said, the ruling party’s student organization has brutally attacked on the protesting general students several times. But the university administration is not taking any action against the attackers; rather they are depending on the gangsters to destroy the movement. If the BCL men are not punished, it will hold a very bad impact in the educational system throughout the country. Therefore, University administration cannot escape the responsibility.
The leaders said, the present scenario proved that the ruling party has established violence at the highest educational institution. They snatched the least democratic right of the common students. We want to remind them that no movement can be stopped through violence and pressure.
The leftist leaders also demanded the withdrawal of false case against the students and for the proper treatment of the wounded. They also called for a permanent resolution of the crisis in relation to newly affiliated seven colleges.
